I've got about 10 years experience in Financial Services and currently work as a Business Analyst. Through this position, I've gotten good exposure to Technology project and am interested in jumping to the IT side from the business side for the challenge and the money. I've got an MBA in Fiance and have gone back to complete a dual major in Inofrmation and Communication systems.
The classes have been valuable but will not put me in position for the transition that I want. I'm interested in Database Administration or in becoming a developer.
From the business side I have good experience in IT projects and implementation. How do I get myself to the point where I can apply for an IT job with confiedence that I'll be able to deliver? Can I do it without taking a hiatus from my current position? |

Dont do it because you think it pays better - you may find out the hard way...
Im not a finance guy - but typically a "developer" is a very different mindset than an analyst.
DBA and developer are also two differnt types of people - and have differnt types of "skills".
There is a STRONG need go "analysst" skills on the IT side - these people transition to team leads and project managers - which DO pay more than pure developers.
Perhaps that is an avenue that you would like to pursue instead? Tat path would NOT require that you actually be a developer and would get you int he $$ track faster.
For that I would suggest positioning yourself as a analyst on a development team. Get involved in a largetr project (SAP implementation etc) and learn the ropes of the Software Developemnt Lifecycle. From there and from good work of doing the analyst portion ofhte project (requirement defn) you can gain exposure to position yourself for a team lead role.
