I've got about 10 years experience in Financial Services and currently work as a Business Analyst. Through this position, I've gotten good exposure to Technology project and am interested in jumping to the IT side from the business side for the challenge and the money. I've got an MBA in Fiance and have gone back to complete a dual major in Inofrmation and Communication systems.
The classes have been valuable but will not put me in position for the transition that I want. I'm interested in Database Administration or in becoming a developer.
From the business side I have good experience in IT projects and implementation. How do I get myself to the point where I can apply for an IT job with confiedence that I'll be able to deliver? Can I do it without taking a hiatus from my current position? |

I was in a similiar boat. I had 8 years Fin Svs exp w/ a Finance MBA. I converted to a BA at a company with a large IT staff and was given a choice 6 mos down the road - stay a BA or become a developer. I chose the latter. I did, however, have formal training through a technical school in mainframe programming (though I was offered a position in intranet development - but that's another story).
I would ask what they are looking for from developer. Can you transfer? You may need to demonstrate aptitude (ie can you think and reason like a programmer) and in this "downswing" firms may not be willing to train you. Short of getting hand-on experience, I think you'll need some formal training from a reputable place. The other approach would be to become an expert by self-study, but it's tough to get an offer without hands-on experience.
Just my opinion. Either was, good luck.
