Hello,
I find myself in a similar situation to Jon, except that I am one of a growing number of people trying to jump career tracks. I have experience in network cabling and light hands-on experience with Cisco routers. I will take, and expect to pass the CCNA in May. So, the perennial question is how does a 40 year old multi-talented, technical manager with a good balance of people and technical skills break into a field that he finds wonderfully exciting and challenging? Do employers want mature, dependable and dedicated "newbies" to work along side of the young studs?

I work for a large network integrator and it is nearly impossible to find someone mature enough, yet technical enough (which you are), to be a project manager for our group of young techs.
Granted, we are in TX and not the Bay Area, but I wish there were more folks in their late 30's or older who would come work for us.
Go for it!
