My experience in the tech field after working for two F1000 companies and now being back in the market and talking with over 50 companies in the past 2 months,,,
Larger companies, ones for the most part that are publicly traded do test for drugs for the simple fact that it is a liability issue. That is how they see it anyhow. Most smaller ones, or pre IPO's do not. If they do, then it most likely is not the place for you.
In either case, if you drug test, then you will more likely than not only have to test once, and as a former manager that has done the hiring before, marijahoopie is looked upon the same way. The reason for this is that most tests if not all are outsourced to a local lab where results come back "positive" or "negative" and umbrella all substances below that result. It is illegal for the HR dept to recieve notification of the exact substance that was found if "positive" and seldomly does any word make it back to the hiring manager except whether to you passed of failed.
The only time you will know is when you ask (if you fail) they must disclose what substance is found. You can detest the result as they can be erroneous and the company is most likely, if not legally opbligated to let you take the test over again. If you are under any prescription meds than tell the lab in advance, so they can overlook it.
I myself do not believe in drug testing, not for pot anyhow. However, the best way to deal either to play it straight until you get the job or drink the teas that you can find at head shops....they totally work if you do it right. The only caution is if you have a high fat percentage wherby most chemicals are stored in fat and hard to mask.
I have decided that any place that drug tests or needs to have copies of my financial records upon employment is not the company that i want to be with anyhow....if that were the case than i might as well go work for the IRS! |

Your comment that they are "not legally opbligated to let you take the test over again" isn't entirely true. It depends on what state you are in. In my state, labs are required to split the sample, test one half and freeze the other half. If it comes back positive you are allowed to send the second half to the testing lab of your choice (at your expense) to have that tested. If that comes back positive you are sunk, if not you might be in a good position.
All drug tests are performed for two and only two reasons: 1) to find pre-existing medical conditions that might run up medical costs (like diabetes, epilepsy, heart conditions, and the like). Remember that they ask you about every prescription and non-prescription drug you take. 2) to ferret our marijuana users. These tests are almost totally ineffective on drugs other than marijuana.
