I have been applying for jobs for the past 6 months without any result. Is there any fault with my resume? How can I make it better?
I did 2 internships with NOAA, DOC and University, and received excellent ratings on my performance reviews.
I am graduating in May and until now I haven't got any definite leads yet for full-time opportunities.
Can anybody give me suggestion on where to look? I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks. |

Mike, you need to be looking at job search techniques and possibly some skills improvement.
I recommend a trip to the local public library or the library at your college. Look for a book named 'Guerilla Tactics in the Job Market' by Tom Jackson. Or ask the librarian how to get it. It's out of print but it's the best book on jobhunting in a down market.
As a newbie I was in precisely the same position in 1982 as you are today, and this book helped me find a job in a recovering (but still bad) job market in 1983. I didn't have a clue what to do but a kindhearted HR guy told me so and said to go read this book in the library. Best advice I ever got from anyone.
I found out where 'hidden' job listings were and applied for several jobs. Within 2 weeks I had a phone interview and almost talked my way past 5 better-qualified applicants. Two months later I actually landed a job, this time by distinguishing myself from 5 other applicants. Using this book.
One more thing. You may have a skills deficit. If so do not panic. I suggest looking at building your skillset. Look at adding skills to your skillset. Think about putting together an impressive web site showing what you can do and what you know.
