In Reply To: With tech industry and the economy slowly warming up, many of us may face this decision. Would you go back to your old company; the same company that let you go? If so, will you go back with a sense of relief and gratitude that you are back in familiar country? Will you have a nagging thought that somehow you are now viewed as "damaged goods?" When the IPO bubble burst in the late 90s, many companies re-hired expatriates that jumped ship hoping for a quick hit. How are today's companies viewing their previous and recently RIF'd employees? Under what circumstances would you go back to your old job? Conversely, what would keep you from NOT going back assuming that you parted on good terms?
Message: I work for a software company where I haven't been able to break into even front line management (long story). I do have management experience at my previous job. There are many pluses for me to stay with my current employer. My sketchy plan is to stay where I'm at until the last year of part-time business school, then try to transition into management at that time (I expect a very busy year). Then when I get my degree, I should be able to springboard to another company at the director level or stay here and do the same. My preference is to stay where I'm at and get experience while I don't have to learn a new product. I want to take advantage of what I have available to me. That way I can switch jobs more easily down the road if I wish. That's my plan, anyway.
