I have been applying for jobs for the past 6 months without any result. Is there any fault with my resume? How can I make it better?
I did 2 internships with NOAA, DOC and University, and received excellent ratings on my performance reviews.
I am graduating in May and until now I haven't got any definite leads yet for full-time opportunities.
Can anybody give me suggestion on where to look? I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks. |

"I have been applying for jobs for the past 6 months without any result. Is there any fault with my resume?" This should tell you a lot right there.
Let's just start with this: I have nearly 20 years experience in IT. I'm talking about the days when I worked in IS (Information Systems) and before that it was MIS (Management Information Systems) and before that it was DP (Data Processing).
Here??s my advice:
1) DO NOT look for quick/easy answers in one (1) single posting. Anyone who portrays that is full of camel dung.
2) Since you are NOT going to get quick/easy answers you MUST be willing to do some homework. No one will spoon feed you ?? it??s NOT our job.
3) Seek out professional sources.
4) I suggest the following message boards: realrates.com,
Ceweekly.com
5) Accept the information you find EVEN IF IT DOESN??T FIT THE IMAGE OF WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN TAUGHT IN COLLEGE.
Colleges are in the business of cranking out students. They DO NOT tell you the difficulties in getting and keeping a job in IT. They DO NOT tell you that over 300,000 IT jobs have been lost in the US over the past 2 years. They DO NOT tell you that over 800,000 H-1B visa were approved over the past 4 years for IT positions in the US and that American jobs are being lost to foreign nationals. They DO NOT tell you that there is rampant age discrimination in IT and that your career will last as long as that of a professional athlete, maybe less.
If you want to learn the truth you MUST SEEK KNOWLEDGE from professionals in the IT field, and NOT from recruiters because they will use you for a commission. You may not like this answer. If you do not then you are too thin skinned for IT.
If you can handle my response and have SPECIFIC questions then fire away.
