That's why I work out of my house. You need two separate phone lines, one for your phone, one for your fax/modem, a cell phone, and a pager. Also a PC, with a decent bubble, inkjet or laser printer, with office pro, and winfax pro installed. A decent email program like Eudora, or Outlook makes your life a lot easier also. You can get a fax machine, but winfax turns your PC into a virtual fax. If you really wanted to get fancy, you could install an OPX line in your house as a work extension, thats runs off of your company PBX.
I am a design engineer, and my productivity and customer response time has doubled since I started doing this. At first our department manager was against the idea, but seeing the positive results, has changed his attitude. I convinced him to allow me to try it by showing him my timesheets, and the sheer amount of hours spent in my cubicle. I also was able to prove that logistically, it would be quicker to respond to field calls from where I lived. A two week trial basis has turned into two years now. I still have to go into the office for meetings, and presentations, but the stress of showing up every day, and having someone watching over my shoulder has been removed.
