In Reply To: I recently left the military and joined a major telecom company where I planned to stay for a while. I was only there for 4 months. I have however 7 years of diverse telecom experience. I have been laid off for a short tiem and have been deluged by recruiters. The only solid offers I have had are from contract firms -- is this a good route for career planning or is it limbo? I want to work for an established carrier service as a site tech but I usually just get offers to be an installer which massive travel. Please give me some guidance? I been a little sheltered by the military.
Message: Yes. Working on contract is both very lucrative and respectable. We hired a guy a few months ago on a temp to perm basis. He is making so much now as a contractor that he doesn't want to go perm. BTW, I work for AT&T Wireless, where we hire contractors all the time. Half the people in my office are contractors, even some of the managers. In my opinion, the best come from the military. Further, given all the downsizing, working as a contractor seems no more dangerous to me than working for the company itself. When bad times come, everyone seems equally at risk unless they have a specific skill that is desperately needed.
