I am presently considering the pursuit of a master's degree in either computer science or software engineering. In terms of long term monetary payoff, job security, and upward mobility, which is preferable? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option? I presently have six years of IT experience, an MBA, and a BS in Computer Science. I intend to pursue this second master's degree on a part-time basis while I continue to work. |

This may seem like a basic point, but it really depends on your goals and where your interests lie.
If you want to focus on the development/programming side of the house followup with the CS degree. The CS degree will focus on improving your understanding of data structures and producing more complex/advanced applications.
If you are going down the Software Project/Program Manager trail than I would suggest the SW Eng. degree (I recently graduated with my Master's in SW Eng). The SW Eng degree will provide focus on managing software, metrics, ISO/SEI CMM, QA/testing, etc.
With an MBA I would guess that your interests lie on the management side of the house, if so, I would recommend the SW Eng. degree.
And the manager/director route typically results in a larger monetary payoff. But again, you should follow your likes and interests.
