The last time a local news personality was successfully plucked from obscurity and thrown into the cast of TODAY as a cohost was Jane Pauley -- and she wasn't even cohost, her title, at first, was "regular member of the TODAY cast" which at that time was anchored by Tom Brokaw.
Sure Rene Syler came from local news, but she's still obscure and part of an ensemble. Lisa McCree was from local news (unless you count her overnight stint with Aaron Brown), and she was a disaster. NBC won't just throw an unknown face on viewers. The person will be in-house, and a familiar presence (though, mark my words, Katie's not leaving anytime soon). |

I think it speaks to the fact that women are not valued now not just for the appearance but also for their credibility and experience, which is why I agree we won't likely see an anonymous reader given the job of TODAY co-host in the future.
Jane Pauley was something like 25 when she tapped for TODAY. She was a pretty face from the breadbasket of America. Did she need credentials? Was she going to interview heads of state? Absolutely not. Her job was to smile, nod, and support the anchor of the program with a wholeseome gentility which she did to terrific effect for 13 years on TODAY.
