It used to be laid-back surfers...asians/hispanics/blacks/whites all getting along...not-too-bad traffic on the way to/on the way home from work.
But...
The beaches are too crowded...all of the minorities hate each other and are striving to stand apart/stand out from each other--and too much gang violence...and now traffic is a 24/7 thing.
I loved SoCal when I was growing up. Blue-collar workers used to be able to buy a home and raise a family there (like MY parents and our family.)
But not anymore.
It's just too crazy nowadays--and I say this as a left-leaning, minority, multi-cultural-loving person.
There's just too many people in SoCal. Unless you make serious "coin" (a la anchors salary, or maybe a sesoned reporter) you CANNOT possibly raise a family there.
Oh sure, you might be able to hang-on for a few years--but then you'll have to move waaaaay out to the "Inland Empire" (what kind of Realtor B-S is THIS name???) and face 90-minute commutes.
Unless you can afford to live in the great neighborhoods or send your kids to private schools, your kids will be thrown into a veritable lion's den of a public school...attended by white kids feeling squeezed by minority kids...and minority kids from dozens of different nationalities all angry at each other. The result will be a multi-cliquish school where the cultures don't interact with other cultures--and the threat of a gang fight looms every day.
A racist comment? No--I am a minority product of these schools (I was able to hold my own because I'm above-average size and was an excellent athlete.) I'm just tellig it like it is.
So, if you can command an anchor's salary, then maybe you might make a "go" at SoCal. BUt if you're a photog, editor, producer, or young reporter WITH a family, I again would consider the Knoxville job.
I left my beloved Cali for the southwest because I now have a family of my own...and I bailed for the earlier reasons stated up above.
