how your respective situation turned out, and it left you bitter. You say that there is no one to negotiate with, but that is simply a cop out on your part. I WOULD negotiate with whomever is across the table from me.
The reason is simple: Most incoming owners aren't going to come in and blow everything up. ie. contracts, working situations, etc. If they did, they'd risk imploding the very thing that they wanted to profit by. Granted, there wil always be the crazy manager who wants to reinvent the wheel with square blocks, but most coorporate types are a heck of a lot more conservative.
Delaying negotiations while waiting for the company to sell is a waste of time, energy, and patience. It could be years before that station sells, and all the while the employees would be getting screwed. By doing something, they may well improve their lot, and atleast nip at their masters' heels.
Telling the union guys that they have 90 days? By doing so, you'd be telling the company just how long they have to wait until the Bargaining Unit self-implodes. People need to be ready for the loooooonnnnngggg haul!
I would rather be a union hump than screwed over by the money grabbing company as one of their sheep.

Its not just my situation, I have plural experiences to draw on for this one.
What motivation is there for Emmis to negotiate before they sell? None that I can see.
What are the employees hoping to solve by joining a collective bargaining unit?
From the one post who was obviously one of the yes votes, I read only they want to be managed better. the union can't help there.
I give up though. you win. go pay your dues to the union. But do yourself a favor. Keep a close eye on them and loook beyond the rhetoric crap. treat tem like your personal agent and demand full knowledge all along the way.
