So Orthicon, you've obviously been around awhile, if you could only choose between a reporter and a producer as a news director, which would you choose and why?
You've been in this business long enough to have seen the news director position evolve away from (at least in mid-big markets) hands-on, creative development and evolve towards the corporate bottom line reality that it is today. |

in mind, then i probably couldn't in good conscience choose either one..because neither would have a hope of understanding the"corporate bottom line reality" that you cite.. (and with which i pretty much agree, although not totally)..without that as a given, i'd choose a reporter..(or a photog) simply on the basis that they've been out there and done that.. on the streets.. where the stories are happening.. and they would have a much better idea, as a news director, what goes into actually getting a piece on the air..and therefore, getting a show on the air..
