In Reply To: TV sports is a dinosaur at most stations and in the next 5-6 years, most stations in the top 50 markets will do sports very infrequently within a newscast. If a top athlete gets arrested, that will make the newscast...but features, sound bites with boring coaches, and highlights are going to cease to exist. Why? One word...CONSULTANTS. ALL consultants hate sports, and they've used the ESPN phenomenon as an excuse to eliminate it from the newscast. This logic is flawed of course, because everyone can get weather on the weather channel 24/7 or on their website, and you can get news all day on cable, and via the internet. Sports in the newscast may stick around in places like Boston, NYC, and Chicago...but just about everywhere else, it's going to be toast soon. Let's face it...the consultants are driving this business.
Message: luvthebeach: Believe it or don't, but the consultants don't always get their way in markets 1-50. As long as certain markets are STRONG in local sports, and their majority audience wants to see it, consultants or not - Sports will remain a strong segment in the Newscasts. Consultants may start up the car, but ratings and cash DRIVE that bad boy. It's up to markets with good local sports (and viewer interest) to keep their segments fresh and fan-friendly to avoid the broom when the dreaded consultants arrive to "clean up" the Newscasts.
