In Reply To: Your language was agressive when you mentioned "humps" and "idiots", and your lack of clarification regarding the difference between "having unions representing" and "joining a union" was vague at best. Just when would be a good time to hold a union vote? When things are good, and do not rock the business boat? Anytime that a union is requested to come into a shop, the management/ownership is going to freak. In most instances, when unions have gone into any work site, there have been issues that needed to be addressed and people who felt that they needed representation. WRONG TIME TO JOIN A UNION? There is no wrong time or right time, just a perceived need, actaul or not, for professional negotiators to represent workers. Bindaredundat, leaving work places that have idiots in charge is fine when you're working in Beaudunk, WhateverState, but Portland is in the top 25 market size, so some people may want to actually stay somewhere and put down roots. Unions do offer some protection, not total protection, but some is protection is better than none, ...at least that's what yer Pappa told yer Mamma!
Message: humps. yes. I dislike union reps immensely. they don' t understand our business, and have their best interests in mind. Not yours. And they follow the same procedure everywhere they go, riling up the people with a bunch of rhetoric so they can get the vote. then, they go back on all their empty promises. they are worse then politicans. No one needs them. As I see it, the only time to actually vote in a union would be when the current management is likely to be their a long time, and they have been unfair with wages and benefits. I left a top ten market because the boss was an ass, and I have a family. No one OWES you a job at their station. You like the city so much? Go work somewhere else. change careers. go back to school. Stop blaming the crappy managers who are on the way out the door anyway. If Emmis was not selling the station, and the current managers were staying put, I could see this being a need. But again, for the third time at least, they are leaving! they are selling! there is no one for the union to bargain with! you have been screwed and you will lose money in the deal. My sugestion: Tell the union reps they have 90 days to bring in an agreement, or the deals off.
