I have no idea how this thread has lasted as long as it has. But regardless, let's cut to the chase. I can't even make up a reason an Atlanta station - be it WSB or otherwise - would ignore a significant development in this decades-old case. They simply would not ignore a potential blockbuster story. And - trust me on this - relationships with city leaders (PD or otherwise) are far from cozy. If anything they've reached a decades-old low.
The sad truth -- and I won't defend this -- is in the ATL (as in many other markets), local TV stations simply do not have the resources to conduct a full scale investigation on all the tidbits of "new" information that comes up. If there is any fault, this is it.
I can unequivocally state there is no desire to squash, cover up, or ignore this story. To think so would be giving these stations WAY too much credit.
