IF YOU HAD TO HIRE A FIRST TIME NEWS DIRECTOR, WOULD YOU WANT SOME ONE WHO CAME UP THE RANKS AS A REPORTER OR A PRODUCER? |

The best ND's I know were small market sportsguys. They have the field knowledge you're looking for including everything from running a truck to shooting their own stuff to deadlines. They produce their own segments generally, and have to coordinate many people in the field every Friday night. No one can ever accuse them of not putting hellacious hours especially if they worked weekends. But the biggest thing is they are actually personable, and people genuinely like them and by extension working for them. In short a small market sports department is a microcausim of a newsroom and regardless of if they switch to news or not, sportsguys are good ND's
