In Reply To: One of the most controversial phrases to come out of Milwaukee tv during the past 20 years. A talented 40-something female anchor was suddenly canned, not renewed, forced out, whatever PR term you'd like to use - because the GM thought she "skewed old." You state that I "clearly have no info on the demographics of Dana's appeal," yet claim his appeal "spans a broad spectrum and will continue to do so through at least his current contract." Really? And you know this....how? Is Dana signed to a very short-term deal? Yeah, TV broadcasting is not like baseball. Guys like Mike Wallace, Andy Rooney and Dan Rather would have difficulty throwing the ball 60'6", let alone pitching it over the center of the plate. True, most of the Yankees' losses have nothing to do with RJ(he pitches every fifth game), but Johnson's losses have everything to do with Mr. Unit. He's not getting it done AND he certainly hasn't been worth the investment. Nothing against Dana at all. I simply think the "aging free agent" signing is risky, and I'd probably go in another direction. If I'm wrong, and KPHO rules the evening news race for the next several years, I'll apologize for "talking back to you," alright??
Message: I'm not sure what you meant by that. This seems to be a pretty tame discussion. Anyway . . . At this stage of the season, RJ is clearly not helping the Yankees. That is evident from his numbers. He's 5 and 5 and his ERA is above 4. On the other hand, Dana has clearly helped KPHO. As mentioned by an earlier poster, its 10:00 ratings were up nearly 40% from last year and KPNX's 10:00 ratings were down about 20%. The other newscasts anchored by Dana showed similar trends. Although network programming gave the station a boost, the local newscast improvement was greater than the boost from the network. Nobody realistically expected him to immediately propel the station to #1 in all evening newscasts. But he almost did it at 10:00, which KPNX has dominated quite handily for many years. That itself is a real accomplishment for KPHO. So again, the RJ comparison is a poor one. Whether the comparison can be applied a year from now, we'll have to wait and see.
