you get paid well and never get fired. and, can choose your own path.
look around you. every newsroom has a top tier of people who don't worry about this stuff. its because... they're good!
the rest have to throw in their lot with the group, hoping that they can be protected by the common good.
That's NOT how free enterprise is supposed to work. that's socialism.
and in the end, you will get a 3 year contract, for 2% wage increases each year, and you will pay 1% in dues, so you will net a 1% increase each year.
If you don't think you can do better than that on your own, you must really suck at your job.
try this: look on the website of the local that is going to rep you. the list of stations they have agreements with is there.
call someone in th ebargaining unit at those stations. ALL of the stations.
ASK THEM if the union protects everyone from being fired, stopped the managers from being assholes, got them big raises, or in fact, made things better in any way. especially, any unit that is a new addition.
go ahead. I know what you will find. and its not pretty.
