"Fear and intimidation," or "praise and team building."
The second one always works best because
when employees trust the boss and feel that he/she has their best interest at heart, they are willing to work harder. They'll even go the extra mile without extra pay because they feel they have a good relationship with mangement. They also take pride in feeling like a valued member of a competative, kick-ass team.
Fear and intimidation doesn't work because you spend all your time systematically monitoring employees to make sure that angry workers YOU'E CREATED don't in some way harm the product. And more importantly, you won't find enough people who are willing to go the extra mile in a crisis.
Newscasts and news gathering are all about teamwork. Fear and intimidation are about isolation, suspicion and competition against your own team members - instead of the competing station's teams.
Fear and intimidation produce unnecessary and overwhelming stress in an already high stress occupation. The result? Unhealthy, unhappy, angry, paranoid, exhausted, short tempered, negative, dreadful workers who ARE the news organization. They then without realizing what they're doing - accidently send all that repulsive energy to the very viewers management is trying to attract. How is that done? Through EVERY sight, sound and motion the entire news organization is putting on the screen.
It's simple: a bad tree produces rotten fruit that nobody wants to eat.
A good tree produces delicious fruit that people like to eat. |

Does Neil intimidate?
It's clear Local 4 is about sleazem at least during the book. I.E.: the ex-porn star, wild things your high schoolers do on spring break, the sex secret for married couples. What a bunch of crap. Not exactly news, not even close to news. Sad, sad, sad.
