I guess that the best way to improve your chances is, as the previous post noted, to become a little more involved personally in the newsroom. This is considering that you already do what it takes to get the job done and are not a clock-watcher.
In the end, it's all about relationships. The better you get along with your co-workers and managers, the better your chances of staying where you want to be.
I know you might find it difficult maybe because you think it would be considered "sucking up" to the boss. It really isn't, if you don't want it to be.
Think of your being nice and friendly as another element in your job description.
