I've been reporting for seven years. My work is solid. My news directors, managers, and agents tell me my look is good, I have a very warm on-air presence, my reporting is solid.
Yet, I don't get renewed. So far, it's worked to my advantage because I moved up the market chain. But now that I'm where I want to be, I don't want to lose my spot.
Here's my question: at every station, there have been weaker reporters than me and they seem to get along better with the news directors. I admit, I don't really engage with the management team- I just do my job and leave. Why is it that, these newer, weaker reporters have a better relationship with the news directors and get the leeway to make their mistakes and not get chewed out, whereas I could not make the same mistakes and then I end up getting not renewed?
I only want to improve. What am I not doing? Or what should I be doing?
One last thing, I have considered that maybe it's my work and management is too scared to tell me that I'm just not cut out for it...but I never get that response. And I ask EVERYBODY.
Please help! I'll take any form of critism, as long as it's honest and a fair critique.
