In Reply To: It can be a great but risky experience. If you're willing to take the risk, go for it! I've done it twice. The first time, it turned into a full-time freelance gig with loads of fantastic experience. The second time started that way...but management changed hands. If you decide to freelance, make sure you know the going rates -- and factor in the cost of health insurance, etc. If the gig is union, the health insurance benefit will help. And find out if you can freelance elsewhere or if the deal is exclusive. Working for more than one station can feel like you're trying to date two people at once -- but it can help you survive. Also, be warned it's sometimes awkward when you have to explain to viewers and contacts why you don't have business cards, etc. And remember: always keep looking. Good luck with your decision!
Message: Thanks for all the advice and support. I took the job. I guessed they low-balled me a little bit. I'm making a tad bit more than I'm making now, but I can afford to live at home, so it works for now. My next question: how did you manage to stand out and make an impression with the news director when you only work the weekends? the other freelancer has been there for years and has been past up for fulltime jobs because that person actually started in the market...and still has some polishing to do (lucked out to start in this market, I'd say). Regardless, I don't want to step over anyone, but I do want to make a good impression, and eventually land a full time gig for a few years. Once again, I appreciate your advice.
