I have done One man banding twice now in my career.. I've found there are days when it helps the newsroom but on busy days it hurts.. breaking news there's just to much to do.. camera int. and just getting yourself ready.. honestly if you go that model you have to set quidelines for the newsroom.. Lets not forget this is tv you have to look good for your live shots and if in the south you shoot and edit you will look like trash by the end of the day.. I've seen stations try it news14 ny1 and a lot of times the reporters get their butts kicked and turn very weak one angle stories. a mixture newsroom may work but I will tell you what we need is more guality and less cramp.. |

#1...The safety issue. Would YOU want to be liable for sending a one-man-band into a sketchy neighborhood at night? Or to a potentially hostile interview?? Sounds like one of your 'tragedy waiting to happen' cliches.
#2... It always starts out that a one-man-band should have to crank out fewer stories than a two-man-crew, but when NDs see the dollar signs, it always ends up they have to do the same workload (2pkgs,2vo/sots) as everyone else. Why? Because News Directors don't give a rat's ass about the people who work for them.
One man bands are alot like Communism. Sounds good in theory... but a disaster in the 'real world'.
