Just because he was let go doesn't mean he was a bad news director and it doesn't mean his 'touchy-feely' approach was bad. As one of you mentioned - he'd been there seven years and stations as you know try to change things so they can continue to stay on the edge...no one can begrudge them for that...
But I have to say I give Ron a lot of credit. He dared to be different! Every one of the stories I've ever seen on the station while in the area...are memorable because of Ron's unique 'who-did-what' approach... I believe he raised the moral at the station and took a risk in a very conservative market. He brought that station back to a reputable position.
Did anyone read the USA Today article about how stations are losing touch with what the viewers want? Well, I think Ron was really trying to get his finger on the pulse of the Sacramento Community...But as everyone who's been in that market knows - it's really tough to beat out KCRA 3 when all the 'boxes' are still in the same locations they've always been...in the older communities that have been watching 3 for years...Sometimes it's just tough to break a viewer's habits.
I wish Ron the best of luck - I know he'll land solidly on his feet and any station will be fortunate to have him...and if you end up working for him...listen up and even the most experienced journalist will learn as much as I have from him.
