Genetic engineering is in experimental and applied stages for all of the major grain products, not just corn. Strains are being developed which are resistant to disease and insects by manipulating genes. It is the wave of the future because it the best we way the world has to increase agricultural productivity. Of course the companies which conduct the research toward the end product are in it to make a profit. That's besides the point. There isn't a single agricultural experiment station in the U.S.(from Rutgers to Berkeley to Michigan State to Cornell), Canada, Japan, China, India, or western Europe in which such research isn't being conducted.
As I said, your view (and that of other political leaders) is not in line with the scientific literature and is, in fact, a measure of the severity of scientific illiteracy as a social problem even in "advanced" nations. |

is fine, you even acknowledged the surplus in this country, we are paying farmers to not grow corn. WE HAVE NO NEED FOR GM FOODS of any kind.
This is all being done for PROFIT. If you make corn that produces its own pesticed you save money on pesticide and you make MORE PROFIT. If you make food that can withstand herbicdes you MAKE MORE PROFIT. If you create corn that can be eaten and not grown so these third world contries that you pretend to champion can not create there own food source an are forced to continually buy your awful GM corn, YOU MAKE MORE PROFIT.
Take of your rose colored glass and stop complaining about "scientific illiteracy." You act like you just got of a ride at EPCOT. GM foods are not the future.
GM foods are a profit tool by a massive corporation to reap rewards off of genetic patents. Its a revenue stream. Native corns only draw back is that you can't own the DNA rights.
