is quite simple.... the News Business is driven by ratings because that drives revenue.
Therefore, if the NUMBERS didn't reflect people were watching Jacko, believe me, it wouldn't get the play that it does.

watching good, compelling impactful stories...
Don't believe me -- go ahead, produce a month of "good" stories on your local newscasts -- ignore Jacko, the Blonde Murders, etc... and

We're NOT watching!!!
The number of people watching TV news keeps falling, and falling, and falling.... as newscasts get crappier, and crappier, and crappier. Coincidence? I think not.
As I said earlier, I'm watching 'The Simpsons' at 5 and 11 because it's far more intelligent than ANY of your newscasts.
Sure.... y'all do still have some viewers... but then again, so do 'Jerry Springer' and 'Fear Factor'.
Like I said, someday soon, walk outside the newsroom and talk to some of us in the real world who have IQs over 50 and don't live in trailer parks. We're not watching.
