In Reply To: I'm intrigued by the LostRemote interview referenced above. Who's putting 50 or 60 people on the street with one man banding? That may well truly change the dynamic, but it seems everybody who is going to OMBing is just trying to cut costs ... they put no more people on the street, so they end up with the same crap as everybody else, only done more poorly. I would be very interested in expanded discussion on how one might run an operation with 50 or 60 VJs ... What does your air product look like? Is it dramatically different from the formula stuff we crank out today? Do you dump the concept of "packages," and aim just to get the story on the air? Thoughts?
Message: Many of us who've done OMB and moved on to a 2-person field crew know the quality difference. Reporters don't shoot well. Photogs don't report well. Sure there are exceptions, but one of the hallmarks of civilization is specialization---with a 2-person team you get someone who's a specialists at seeing and recording good video, and a specialist at interviewing and reporting. The product is simply better. And there's a loss of productivity with a OMB; it takes X-number of man-hours to do a good package. If you only send out one person, it's going to take them a lot longer than a 2-person team. It takes longer to set up, longer to breakdown, longer to gather information in the field, because the individual is trying to do 2 jobs. It might be useful to have all reporters carrying a handycam, and let them get some B-Roll, but for interviews, stand-ups, and anything high-quality, you need a real photog.
