Sportyone has it right on the lead in being the biggest factor why KPHO does so well at 10pm. But the one thing that I saw different in this book with Kent Dana is that KPHO retained more of its lead in audience than they did in past ratings. I remember CBS giving lead in numbers of 12-14 on certain nights and the 10pm getting a 4-5. Now you are seeing the same numbers for shows like CSI Miami and getting a 9-10 newscast rating for 10pm. Unfortunatly on bad programing nights KPHO doesn't gain any audience. In fact KPHO was tied with KPNX for first place at 10pm until the last few days of the book. That is when CBS had the Rob and Amber get married special and the Amber Fry movie that gave lead in numbers in the 3-4 range. So you can spin the situation to what ever you want but if CBS continues with its strong programing and NBC continues to decline with lead in numbers then it is just a matter of time before KPHO benifits at 10pm. And if Kent keeps the high lead in numbers then in managements eyes he is worth it. |

KPH0's 10 pm newscast improved nearly 40 percent from a year ago, while KPNX dropped more than 20 percent. KPHO's 5:00 newscast improved by more than 20 percent, while KPNX's 5:00 dropped by nearly 20 percent. And KPHO's 6:30 (which doesn't compete with any local newscasts) also improved. And I believe that KPHO was the only local station to have an increase in their news audience.
True, CBS's programming has also improved, helping its local newscasts. But KPHO's local news improvement is greater than the boost given by the network, and KPNX's local news decline is worse than its network.
