In Reply To: That the problem with the post morts y'all are talking about is the format of the meeting... A session that covers what went wrong. Post morts can be of value--even when everything goes right on the air (and that is all we care about). Isn't it nice to hear from the director, producer, editor, reporter, truck op etc and sort out what can be done better? I find it helpful when done properly. Now that is a rub I know, because 95% of the time, its not done correctly, and becomes a b*tch session, and finger pointing. One technique I take is to try an take control of the meeting--don't let the ND or deuce run it. Let them say there was a bad chyron. OK...you are the producer, where did it come from. Ask the chyron op/AP/writer wher ethe info came from and work back through the process--find a solution, not a place to afix blame.
Message: Reading all these posts just reminds me that no matter where you are, it's the same sh**, different call letters. I swear I have lived throught eh original poster's experience myself - it almosts makes me want to ask where he/she works. we might have been co-workers! Anyway, because of several bad experiences with post-mortems, I got into the habit of making my own list of nitpicky things during my show, then emailing them to the ND with explanations/reasons (I wasn't the last on the air in the evenings, so I could do that ahead of the dreaded meeting with the entire staff.
