Message: for as long as news departments are more sales driven than journalistically motivated. Let's face it, doing quality reporting day in and day out is hard work. It's hard to contain the costs of research and legwork. Productivity is much easier to measure in terms of live shots and story counts than trips to the court clerk's office or background meetings with sources. Besides, they can put you in jail now for refusing to reveal your sources or to turn over your notebook or tapes. And, since we live in a litigious society, controversial investigative stories carry a high risk of lawsuits. Best to avoid trouble and do "safe" stories, such as abductions, freeway chases, celebrity trials and survivor tales. What we have here is an increasingly cozy marriage between corporate media and big government. Smile--here we are.
