You tell your prospective employer up front, "Listen. If you call News Director X, he's going to say (insert his standard comments here). We had a huge misunderstanding about (tell the truth about what happened here), and he's spent the past two years torpedoing me.
If you'd like a constructive reference that fairly and accurately represents my work and who I really am, please talk to (insert the name of the person who's going to tell them you walk on water.)
Also, if there's someone else in your old newsroom who could back up your story, offer that person as a reference as well.
Not taking care of this up front and just letting your potential NDs call this guy is a huge mistake. |

your in denial! You get fired, "well, it can't be my fault. Someone else is to blame." Cannot get a new job, "well, in no way can that be because the guy who got the job was more talented...no that's not it. It must be my old boss is trying to screw me!"
At some point you are going to have to grow up and put the blame on yourself...especially if you did something that is so unmentionable you refuse to write about it on this board
