As long as you believe yourself a commodity, you will bob forever on the sea of uncertainty. That's because you'll be subject to the tides of this "market" to which you refer.
There is no market, folks, and the reality is there never was one. That is an illusion, and the best you can do is blossom where you're planted and enhance your value daily through the expansion of your skillset.
At best. the career ladder is a hoax, compliments of your friendly neighborhood (self-serving) system of higher education. It requires an ever-expanding universe, and when that isn't present, the cruelty of the hoax is revealed.
To thine own self be true. A career isn't something that can be manipulated. Be the best you can be -- where you are -- always -- and let your career take care of itself.

xnuzboss,
I agree with you. That's the positive and right attitude to take. You're half defeated if you take "it's a bad job market" attitude. It's bound to affect your job search actions in one or another.
It just takes one news director to say yes. You may have to send out many tapes, but it'll be worth it for that one "yes" you're willing to accept.
