In Reply To: Yes.... I use the (...) It makes everything easier to read. Sentence fragments, of course. (We listen to conusltants who say "use them") I, however, don't mind if anchors change the copy a little bit. However, usually.. if they touch it at all, they totally change the meaning of the story. So.... I'd say, the best thing to do.. come in at 4, watch oprah... roll out to the set at 4:58:30... and roll back into your office at 5:57:45. (going directly to your office, without passing the ND's office gets you extra points with the producer) It's what my anchors do. And if you are really good writers, why are you anchors? Oh, wait.. forgot... you couldn't live on our lousy pay. (Yes, this was tongue in cheek) I fully anticipate getting nasty anchors replying. That is ok. My ego is that good.... (....)
Message: ...good. It's just big. And you prepared to get blasted, so here goes. First off, too bad you work with lazy anchors. But don't pin that title on ALL anchors. There are those of us who actually WORK, and who actually CARE about what we do. Personally, I anchor because I like to communicate and relate to others what's happening in the world around them. I don't produce (regularly) because I DON'T LIKE to. Never wanted to be in that position of responsibility. But yes, I CAN and DO write, and even produce when needed. A couple of things: It is NOT easier to read (...). In our shop, one anchor uses those as part of his script marking. I do not. And why would you want to make more work for yourself by putting them in scripts (and chances are their in multiple times). And too bad you write your copy for your consultants. You write fragmented sentences because they tell you to? Try talking to your friends in fragmented sentences and see if they look at you funny. You probably don't use verbs either. You should be writing copy to convey news to your AUDIENCE. Chances are, your consultants are NOT your audience.
