In Reply To: My personal Ford is nearly 10 years old and I just crossed 184K miles with few major problems. The cat. converts went bad at 100K, which should happen, and I've replaced most of the normal suspension parts, but otherwise, bulletproof. And that's hard driving with heavy loads. Plus, this model was the first year with independent suspension (after years of twin I's), so the newer models are much tighter in the steering box and the trannies are better. In a pinch once, I had to transport 3 complete camera rigs out of an airport, including a Stedicam rig. Granted, I was packed to the gills and wouldn't normally do this, but the Explorer handled it just fine (sport 2 dr model, no less). Ford Vans are also excellent for live truck applications. I TRIED to blow an engine for nearly 6 months on a van with 220K miles and simply couldn't make it happen. My station re-fit the van top to bottom and it was the best vehicle in the fleet, even though half the vans were newer models. I wouldn't normally gush about any car manufacturer, but I have been extremely pleased with my choice of Explorer, and my next car purchase will most likely be another Ford. Now, if I could get Henry, Jr. to PAY me for saying these things....
Message: I worked at a station in Kansas more than 15 years ago and we had 2 of the crappiest news vehicles EVER. One was a 2-door 4-cylinder 1987 Chevy Cavalier hatchback that only worked when we remembered to feed the hamster on the treadmill under the hood. The other was a Ford Bronco microwave truck that broke down so frequently that we sometimes had to TOW it to live shots. (Hey, at least the mast still worked.) You can't imagine how embarrassed we were when our LIVE EYE truck showed up at breaking news hitched to the back of a AAA wrecker. Those were the days!
