Unfortunately, there are more bad news directors than good ones. Make no mistake about it, the bad ones often speak ill of employees that don't renew, or use their out clauses to persue other interests. Don't forget that ND's power trip all the time. It's sad to say but I don't think it's a battle we can fight and win. The good news is that if a ND really wants you, he/she won't let one negative reference stop the hire. I personally know of two incidents where a ND gave unflattering references on anchors that still got the job. And get this, the hiring ND told the anchors exactly what the previous ND had said. I'm sure the anchors had grounds to fight back but it was chalked-up as a laughing matter.
