Greetings. Good news: I got my first internship at a local station in Minneapolis. I'm just looking for some tips that will help me avoid common "first-time" mistakes. Your comments are most appriecated. I do have one big question: what do I wear? I'll be out in the field, in the newsroom, editing, etc...do I wear office attire (dress shirts/pants/ties)or day-to-day attire (nice button up, jeans, polo)?? Thanks. |

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got in my internships was to know when to ask questions and when to just watch and learn. There is nothing more annoying than an intern who won't shut up. Of course, there's also nothing more annoying than an intern who sits there like a bump on a log watching the world go by. Find a happy medium between these 2 extremes.
Learn as much as you can about as many different areas of the news department as you possibly can. You may find that the job you want/are suited for is something you didn't even know existed before you started your internship.
If you are interning at a union shop, you may not get much hands-on experience so pay close attention and latch onto someone who is experienced and willing to "teach" you, at least verbally, if not physically.
And speaking of physically, this may seem like a dumb thing to say, but try to avoid starting a romatic relationship or other physical entanglement with any employees at the station where you're interning (at least while your internship is going on). It is not likely to improve your standing with management or your colleagues.
Good luck!
