Consumer reporter Emily Akin exiting Channel 2
By MIKE McDANIEL
Houston Chronicle
Channel 2 consumer reporter Emily Akin will leave the station at month's end, and her volunteer group of helpers, known as Akin's Army, is being disbanded.
"Management decided to take consumer (reporting) in another direction," said Akin, who joined KPRC in 1995. She is leaving "with no hard feelings," she added.
She was given the choice to be a general assignment reporter but turned it down "because I can't do the stories I'm passionate about."
Channel 2 general manager Steve Wasserman confirmed Monday that the station has a new consumer reporting plan in the works. He would not comment on Akin and her departure.
Akin has a six-month noncompete clause, meaning she cannot work for a rival station until next year.
She said she's unsure of her career future but will be teaching a course at Houston Community College this fall.

They did the exact same thing with Silvia Castaneda, saying they would be covering the HealthBeat in a different way ... then Krista Marino ends up as the HealthBeat reporter. If you want to dump talent, have the balls to give the real reason. I like Emily a lot, and I know others did too. I hope she gets a kickass job. It's a shame she's being forced to pay the price for sagging ratings. It's not her fault.
