In Reply To: ....and the reporter was probably measuring that from MOS interviews and what has been said in the press and other media. While WCBS-FM's listernership was slowly declining (Mickey Dolenz' hiring for the morning shift turned out to be a critical mistake), it was not a smart thing to introduce a format that would shock and anger viewers who heard the new promos. The "Jack" programming simply ignores older New Yorkers, and besides WPLJ introduced a similar, less intrusive playlist about a month ago. It was nice hearing "Driver's Seat" by Sniff'n'The Tears after all these years on 95.5 FM, by the way.
Message: Despite its recent ratings decline, WCBS-FM was still #10 in the New York market in the spring Arbitrons. And yes, their audience does trend older, but these are also the same listeners with more disposable income, the folks who buy luxury cars and new homes. I believe Infinity is hedging its bets by keeping the "old" format as part of the HD signal. When the Jack format tanks, the traditional oldies format will make a quick return. One more thought: how much money will Infinity save by bringing in new (and cheaper) talent for Jack FM? The CBS FM staff had decades of experience in the market, and guys like Bill Brown, Cousin Brucie and Harry Harrison don't come cheap, even for part-time gigs.
