The Unappreciated Mr. Nelson |

9News, in my opinion, has always been the station with the best look and deepest talent.
To go with someone like Kathy Sabine as chief, "weathercaster," (they can't call her a meteorologist because she doesn't have a degree), shows the level of arrogance that they have reached. They think that they can put pretty Kathy in front of viewers and ask them to look past the giddy smile and flirtatious looks, and see that she is actually someone they can trust for expert analysis in severe weather situations.
They will not, and they won't.
It was nowhere more apparent than on Firday, as she slowly and deliberately told us what we should do (go to the lowest level of your house...in an interior hallway...etc.), while everyone else in the market was giving us an idea of how this storm was behaving, where we might find the worst of it, what would happen in the next few hours, etc.
While she was expanding on the Tornado Warning, and what we should do to save ourselves, not one tornado touched down...
Flooding was the issue.
I have to agree that Mike outclassed Kathy by a wide margin on Friday. Wasn't even close.
Why 9 would go with a ditz like Sabine over Nelson must be a testament to the amount of money 7 was willing to pay.
9 will not be able to survive on looks alone forever.
The rest of us in this market are happy that KUSA is underestimating their viewership's intelligence so blatantly.
Keep at it KUSA! |

It is almost comical to see KUSA pass up on a chance to renew Mike Nelson, only to have him go over to KMGH and do his usual steady, effective job in covering severe weather. The arrogance someone spoke of in a previous post allowed Channel 9 to insist that Sabine was a bigger draw, despite the lack of knowledge about unusual weather forms, which Denver is known to experience from time to time.
Years ago, when Mike was at KMOV in St. Louis, he was up against the market's Q score gorilla, the late Bob Richards. While Bob was a comic master and an accredited meteorologist, storms were his weak point, as the Post-Dispatch so ably pointed out after a tornado outbreak. By the time Mike left KMOV (the management wanted a woman, and signed Trish Brown from Davenport IA), he had helped Channel 4 move very close to eradicating the weather research lead held by KSDK. So Mike went to KUSA, did what he always does (a solid job, keeping KUSA number 1 in weather) and what happens? 9 thought Kathy was more popular, and disregarded what would happen if Mr. Nelson left.
KUSA's mistake is KMGH's gain.
