In Reply To: Crawford obviously...we have had many world leaders in town over the last few months. Ft. Hood...one of the...if not THE largest Army bases, smack dab in the middle of the three biggest cities in the area (Waco-Killeen-Temple). Lots of current controversy over the Trans Texas Corridor...a proposed multi-lane highway/rail connection running through central Texas. Lots of pros and cons and obviously lots of controversy. Continuing controversy on water quality, some crime, always something newsworthy going on at local Baylor University...etc. You're about 90 minutes from Austin, 2 hours from Dallas, 3 hours from San Antonio and around 4 from Houston. KWTX (CBS) is the powerhouse number one, but argueably not the best news product in town. Located in Waco. KCEN (NBC) is number 2...seem to be having an identity crisis recently...some drops in the ratings, but some solid reporting behind the scenes. Located partway between Waco and Temple along I-35. Not a great location when you have dinner break since there is almost nothing around. KXXV (ABC) is the overall number 3, but number 2 in some dayparts...argueably the best morale in the market. Since I work here I would have to say it's the best station in the market for a reporter/producer...we're really focused on local news and we try to be all over breaking events, especially severe weather. Depending on the market in CA I honestly wouldn't take it just because it's California. Texas has a lot to offer, plus my biggest argument for it is NO state or local taxes!
Message: i have to agree with wacowx. i just left waco for dallas and it was a great jumping off point. as far as which station is the best, 10 is number one, but the pay is really crappy. kwtx pays the least of the three, kxxv pays the best (although it is number 3 in the market). kxxv also gives its reporters and producers a chance to expand their talent. kcen is fine, if you don't mind driving to the middle of nowhere to work, and don't mind copying stories the other stations do a day or so earlier. if i were you i'd hit waco, get some experience, then go to a decent sized market in cali if that's where you want to go. kxxv has had people go to cali in the past, so it's not that unreasonable.
