The biggest problem with diaries is that people are usually quite ignorant of which station they are watching. Especially in a situation with a dominant number one, most people will think they are watching the 'main' station in town, every if they are obviously not. Those overnight numbers are finally giving you a truer sense of your market without having to depend on a person telling you they are watching channel 7 when they are actually watching 16.
Why do you think some stations have run IDs in the past saying "Write it down!"? It's because the viewer can't be completely trusted to write the correct station in the diary. We run IDs saying "When you are watching Joe Schmoe, you're watching ABC17" just to solidify in their minds what station they are viewing.
Still think I'm crazy? How many times has your station received a complaint call about some story the competition ran? I'm sure there are MANY examples...we get them in weather all the time. |

...none of this should really matter in DAY TO DAY life for journalists.
The ratings are for the sales department and the ad agencies..
If they want to use a Quiji Board to conjer them..so what!
Tell good stories...
If you know you are #1 you are!
In the past we all said the diaries were fixed..now it's the people meter controversy..
Management will always be looking for the magic bullet..the measuring device or method is not the problem.
