start up news operation.
news director has never been a news director before.
he was placed there by republican friends from baltimore.
small budget, small market look.
a waste of time for anyone with experience and talent.
great place if you're a rookie.
a step away from community cable television.
wtsp
the news operation has fallen on hard times.
corporate owner gannett has made huge mistakes in running this place.
they've made similar mistakes with wusa-tv in washington dc.
it's now the 4th rated station in market 8.
wtsp dropped it's 5pm news.
big big mistake.
they no longer go head to head at 5.
news director recently left and once again they're looking for a leader.
watch yourself in this place.
wtvt
poor management, poor reporter hires, station asleep at the wheel.
this newsroom is run like an 80's news operation with an 80's philosophy.
cannot compete with wfla.
major problems lie with news director, asst news director, and managing editor--all have been there too long and never ever should've been placed in their respective positions in the first place.
white country club attitude has always described this newsroom.
longtime employees with a laundry list of legal and personal problems are protected.
if you're not in the club here, they don;t care about you.
wfla
still the best news operation in tampa, and has been for many many years.
unfortunately internal problems make it one of the worst newsrooms in the country.
the place has been and continues to be unstable.
news director recently canned.
4 years ago the station went on an all out minority recruitment drive for on-air people.
what does that tell you?
this newsroom is winning by default because the other stations in tampa are so very bad.
when you walk in this place you get a very very bad vibe.
this station can get knocked off it's number one perch, if wtsp and wtvt get strong news directors and start covering hard news again.
wfts
still looking for a place in tampa tv.
the fact that they're located on channel 28 is a major issue for viewer loyalty.
they've made some very strange hires and have a weak staff.
technically still a start-up and have a long long way to go.
this station needs some strong reporters and anchors.
newsroom is also a very strange place.
a cross between paranoia and inexperience.
they'll never be able to compete as long as they're located on channel 28.
this place is black hole.
if you go there, you'll never be seen again.

first of all: 813 sounds like you've tried working at all the stations in tampa and did'nt get very far. as for the on air look:
wb- if you get through the central cast bs, the on air product looks ok for the market, the shooting is pretty good. I was just in town and watched for about 3 days they had what everyone else had. dont get the "community cable comment"
wtsp- dont get it, once again not bad for the market but doe'snt stand out. very vanilla. good shooting.
fox13- you're right it does look like its right out of the 80's and and the shooting is sub par for the most part.
fla'- looked a bit mixed up, nice set/colors anchors really bland did'nt stand out, the best of the market, shooting was really good.
wfts- awful just awful, too over the top...shooting left alot to be desired.
tampa looks like a 60's market in the look/style and substance. I am not a resident and dont want to or work in the market, just an observation.
