In Reply To: You should already have a reporter job if you want one that badly. It doesn't take that much to get your first gig but 9 times out of 10 you'll need to move unless you are connected to the hilt or just happen to have a family member who is a news boss. Maybe you are just waiting to have it handed to you on a silver platter. That most likely won't happen in this business. You have to go out and get what you want. I wouldn't take another AP job if you really want to report.
Message: It's not always true that the first reporting gig is the easiest to get. For me it was the hardest. It took me 6-months to get my first bite and about 8 to get an offer. Despite what some might have you believe that is not out of the ordinary. I'm now reporting in market #2. I would say to you don't get discouraged. TV is a strange beast. You have to be what news director are looking for at the time. If you really want to be a reporter, try to get a job in a small market. If you don't get any bites as a reporter, apply for producing or desk jobs. At least you'll be in and then you can pitch stories and push to report. Good luck.
