You should already have a reporter job if you want one that badly. It doesn't take that much to get your first gig but 9 times out of 10 you'll need to move unless you are connected to the hilt or just happen to have a family member who is a news boss.
Maybe you are just waiting to have it handed to you on a silver platter. That most likely won't happen in this business. You have to go out and get what you want. I wouldn't take another AP job if you really want to report.

It's not always true that the first reporting gig is the easiest to get. For me it was the hardest. It took me 6-months to get my first bite and about 8 to get an offer. Despite what some might have you believe that is not out of the ordinary. I'm now reporting in market #2.
I would say to you don't get discouraged. TV is a strange beast. You have to be what news director are looking for at the time.
If you really want to be a reporter, try to get a job in a small market. If you don't get any bites as a reporter, apply for producing or desk jobs. At least you'll be in and then you can pitch stories and push to report.
