Is it better to be in a big market reporting and try to find opportunities to fill-in at the desk or better to drop down to a lower market for a straight anchoring gig? And if that is better - how low shoudl you go? Thoughts?

Anchoring and reporting are two different jobs requiring different skills. Many anchors can and should be able to report but I know few reporters who can pull it off on the anchor desk..unless they have prior experience. You didn??t say what size market you work in right now.
I would go back as far as I could to get a regular gig..preferably weekends in a 120-200 market. Get used to anchoring regular shows..save your show tapes and start sending them out after six months with plans to move close to a year in. Then you??re on your way.
I think it??s hard to cross over from reporter to anchor in a medium to large market unless you??ve done it before.
