In Reply To: Does anyone have any ideas what a fair salary would be for a freelance editor in a top ten market (i.e. one relatively new to Avid or other forms of non-linear editing)? I'd appreciate any feedback.
Message: Atlanta Market... News editing pays the lowest as expected. In Atlanta CNN editors, which until recently edited on avid systems, got mid 30's or so to start by being promoted from with in. I know one person with 15+ years whose still on o/t and has a base just on top of 70K. With o/t they are at 110K+. Freelance in this market is a different ballgame. At the local affilliates you might get $15/hr doing non-linear. I know someone who was offered freelance fill in at The Weather Channel doing their news updates for $17/hr. That was not an Avid edit system though. They do not need experienced editors to cut vo of rain in Detroit anyway. Break out your neighbors Final Cut System and you can cut that. Corporate Avid work in Atlanta is where the bucks are. Corporate full timers make substantially more than News editors with similar experience, like $50's or 60's for 4-5 years experience. Freelance Editors with a good track record can get $50/hr and the big post houses in town. The top top folks command up to $60. I own my own MC9000 system and I charge $125/hr for me editing on my system, or $75/hr for someone to use if they bring their own editor. I pay freelance avid folks with solid experience $50/hr. $35/hr generally if they have less than 5 years experience. $10/hr to digitize. Hope this helps.
