up on some pretty inconsequential things.. but i'll try..
-what is it that bothers you about the p.r. contract?.. MOST private industries have p.r. people..you take what they say with a grain of salt, sure..they're often useful as a means of getting in contact with the people you need to talk to..as for them "fighting the legislature"..maybe they OUGHT to be fighting the legislature..given the legislature's history of interfering with and screwing up private industry, i think it's probably a necessary move on their part.. i don't have a problem with it..
- why do you have a problem with it "being run according to the practices of a private enterprise.."?..what, pray tell me, is wrong with that?..there are governors all over the union who are looking at privatization of god knows HOW many different public entities in their respective states..why?..because private enterprise seems to have a way of cutting through the bullshit and actually GETTING THINGS DONE!..that sounds to me like a pretty good idea..they generally do it better, more cheaply, and much faster..
-the individuals involved have major investments in the biotechnology industry".. and this is bad, WHY??..seems to me that's a real good incentive for doing things RIGHT..if it's their own money and futures at risk, they are GOING TO DO IT RIGHT..
-of COURSE lawsuits are challenging the constitutionality"..there are people out there..legislators and politicians alike, who can't STAND the possibility of all that money passing right undder their noses, and right now, they can't get their hands on it..i tend to see that as a good thing..the less political involvement there is, the better things tend to turn out..
-the chairman declining to appear at assembly-senate hearings?..see all of the above.. he's more than astute enough to see a power grab coming, and isn't about to participate in it.. again, why do you have a problem there?..sounds like smart business to me..
all in all, i think, unless someone can prove there is DEFINITELY something fishy, they should be allowed to pursue their scientific inquiries, and possible discoveries that may benefit all of us someday, WITHOUT the kind of smothering governmental and legislative interference they're trying to avoid..
i admit the possibility that you could be right, and i could be wrong.. i think you should at least consider making the same admission.. on the off-chance these extremely talented and ambitious people might actually know what they're doing..let's keep a careful eye on it, and see what happens..but above all, keep the CALIFORNIA legislature OUT of it.. |

which is where we fundamentally disagree. It is not THIER MONEY. It is OUR MONEY. Billions of dollars. Private investors will not throw in for California's stem cell research because they regard it as too risky. They would rather gamble with OUR MONEY. And it is OUR FUTURE at risk NOT THEIR FUTURE. Get it?
Why don't you ask them if they could please consider using 3 Billion of THEIR money and see what kind of response you get. I'm sure their gold plated PR flack has a handy answer in his pocket.
Sure - there are idiots in the legislature. There are also people who worked very hard for Prop 71 in Sacramento -all of whom I'm sure you championed on election day - and several of whom now have serious doubts about the way things are being run with the Stem Cell institute.
And - yes - your condemnation of the legislature was far more general then mine - for which you previously took me to task. Re:
"the LAST thing scientific inquiry (or anything else, for that matter) needs is the california legislature involved in it.."
No involvment in anything? So what? Dissolve the legislature and hand everything over to Walmart? General Motors? Revive Enron? They certainly had a way with our dollars, didn't they? Where are you gonna find smarter people than that?
