when stem cell research finally breaks through and cures cancer or Parkinson's, all those who oppose it cannot benefit.

The people who oppose stem cell research do so because it goes against their morals of destroying any life. If a cure is found based on taking life, they wouldn't use it for their illnesses because it would STILL be morally offensive to them.
It's the same way people who support stem cell research don't object to war since life forms are always expendable when it's for a good cause and can help large groups of people.
