In Reply To: You might write in jest but, still, are, sadly, accurate. At a Nobel conference last year, the present scientists, including former winners of the Nobel Science Prize, said due the the values and attention of America's current administration, advancements in science - which was once thriving - have taken several steps back. Such a shame. Blackedtape, the point is, maybe tomorrow's research will cure cancer, maybe it will cure a hangnail...but that's just the point...like space, there's a whole world of information we don't know yet. Public funding is necessary because, among a million reasons, the findings are more easily accessible and not privately owned.
Message: exploration - they are accountable, subject to fairly strict oversight and have to work hard for their money. The stem cell industry in California is more like Enron with test tubes. And like Enron they've chosen fertile ground (California) for grabbing massive chunks of public cash and having their way with it - without having to do much explaining to you or me what's going on. And yes - we are talking about public funding of private enterprises - whose principle investors are making key decisions without any proper legislative review.
